She's baa-aack!

Yes, boys and girls, it's the comeback that nobody was clamoring for! I started this blog almost 9 years ago, and then kind of put it aside. Laziness, lack of inspiration, life getting in the way, pick whichever excuse you like best and I assure you it will be accurate. It has recently been suggested to me (I'm looking at you, Skye!) that I start a blog. I considered this for a moment, then the light bulb went off over my head as I realized I already had a blog! A neglected blog, but one nonetheless.

So, considerable time has passed since my last post, and in skimming some of the oldies, I noticed that there was a whole lot of my son on there. He is now almost 18, and although I will still mention him, the overall theme of the blog now is me and my weird thoughts and observations. I'm facing an empty nest next Fall when he, hopefully, leaves for college, and I need to figure out who I am again, aside from "Mom". Need to shift the focus back on me, because I tend to put my needs aside to take care of my son and husband, and that has left me depressed in the past.

Please allow me to re-introduce myself: my name is Lisa and I live in Southern Maine. Not the Maine you probably know from North Woods Law (if you watch that show, I don't), but closer to the city of Portland, that area. I grew up in a small town in  Downeast Maine that was so rural that we had to drive an hour to Bangor to see a movie or go to a mall, drive to another town to grocery shop, you get the point. If you have ever seen the original Pet Sematary film, then you will see the area where I grew up, as it was filmed there. Seriously, watch that film, then watch the documentary on the making of that film. Go on, I'll wait...….

Now back to me! I adore music from the 1980's, particularly the genre labelled New Wave. I don't really love to slap labels on the bands I love, because labels tend to unfairly lump them together despite their differences, and saying I like New Wave could suggest to some that I ONLY like New Wave, which is not true. I LOVE the music of Talk Talk, as many do, and have since the first time I heard the song Talk Talk on my little boom box in my rural, yellow bedroom, adorned with many  posters and magazine pinups of all my faves. The combination of Mark Hollis' beautiful, haunting voice and superb songwriting, Paul Webb, dancing around with that fretless bass and power drummer Lee Harris (and Simon Brenner's synths in some cases) made them one of my all-time favorite bands. I might talk about how I feel about the passing of Mark Hollis in a future post if the mood strikes, but not sure about that yet. Let's move on.

There was more room in my teenage heart than one band could contain, and I also fell in love with an obscure little band called Duran Duran! Not sure if you've heard of them, but I was a full-fledged, card carrying, unapologetic Duranie. They were, "like, Ohmigawd, sooo cute!", but I actually heard them before I first saw them, when Hungry Like the Wolf first hit the airwaves. That song was so damn catchy! Was living in Connecticut at the time, due to parents' divorce and Mom's remarriage, and was a lonely kid, so music became my companion. By 1984, I had been living back in Mai
ne for a year or two (another divorce), when my adolescent dream came true: Friggin' Duran Duran was bringing their tour to Portland, Maine!!! Huge deal at the time, because not many bands ventured to Maine to play, so we were starved for live entertainment. But wait, Portland was a 2-3 hour drive -from my little town, and there was no way my Dad would drive my friend and I there for a concert. My friend's wonderful Dad, who was like family to me (still is)stepped up and offered to drive us to the show and get a couple of hotel rooms. I don't know how loudly I screamed when they hit the stage, because I couldn't hear myself over the other deafening screams! In case you're wondering, Roger was my favorite!

Finally, there's U2, who I discovered at the time the War album was released. I bought that album as soon as I could save my allowance, and was a lifelong fan from the first listen. I immediately sought out their earlier albums and looked forward to each release after that. Went to a couple of shows during the Joshua Tree Tour (the 1987 one, not the latest one) and saw them a few times after that over the years. Always had the nosebleed seats, so I wasn't even sure if it was U2 I was seeing! In 2015, my U2-loving friend and I got to see them in Boston and this time, we were right up against the stage. I regressed to my teenage alter ego as soon as they hit the stage, and was mesmerized as we were so close to them. Let me tell you, Larry Mullen, Jr is even dreamier in person! I know, many people like to hate on Bono and U2. They say Bono is too arrogant, has a God complex, whatever, I have heard them all. Unless Bono one day goes to an animal shelter and slaughters all the puppies, I will still like him and still love U2's music.

Okay, I have gone on long enough in this, my re-introductory post on my hopefully revitalized blog.
Until next time.....

  2. Hi - this is Veronica (viewfromnowhen in Instagram!) :) It's really good to read you here - Instagram does sometime feel like you need to cram your thoughts, so any other platform that allows for some free-from writing is always welcome :)

Would love to read your thoughts on Mark's passing someday (only if you feel ready, of course).
I have to admit I'm not a fan of U2 (I do like some songs though), but, no matter which band you like, there will ALWAYS be some hater somewhere trying to bring them down (just think of how many people thought Talk Talk were "difficult geezers"). So whatever floats your boat is OK! ;)
Duran Duran has been a favorite of mine for a long time (not as long as you, unfortunately!); seeing them live always makes you feel like a teenager. I saw them back in 2008 here in Buenos Aires, where they played "The Chauffeur" for the first time in Argentina, and I distinctly remember being close to fainting! XD

Where's your son going to college? :D Is he considering other options or does he want to go on studying?

    1. Veronica! Thank you for reading this drivel, my friend! I forgive you for not liking U2, since you didn't bad mouth them! LOL! I probably will write a Mark Hollis post soon, because I feel like I need to get it out, you know what I mean?
My son doesn't know yet where he wants to go to college. He has to start his applications soon, but he is putting off researching schools. He thinks he will be going to school in Seattle, so he can be as far away from Maine as he can get, but he would have to save a big pile of money to afford that, and he hasn't! He won't even consider schools in Maine, even though the tuition would be less expensive! He definitely wants to go to college, though, so that is a good first step.

    2. LOL! No disrespect to any favourite bands because I don't like people disrespecting mine! :P
It's really good that your son wants to go to college - most likely he'll settle for somewhere closer to home and he'll congratulate himself for that when he gets homesick :)

  4. Your writing is very good, Lisa... it's so easy to read you! Just like we're sharing a nice cup of coffee (or tea) and chatting. I have very (*very*) short attention span, so take this I'm saying as a compliment.
Writing always seems a great opportunity to learn something new (from the outside world or from our inner world)... so I applaud this space you're curating for yourself :)
Not sure if you were following John Taylor at the time, but he made a hell of a post on January 1st, 1998 in his now long gone personal web (trusttheprocess.com) about writing three pages each morning to become a writer (a concept he said he gleaned from "The Artist's Way"). I have tried that formula many times. I'm very inconstant, so many times I stop halfway. But I always remember this concept and go back to it. And I've learned that the trick is to let the soul express itself, and be willing to listen to it.
You already know we both love Talk Talk and that almost unknown band called Duran Duran (poor guys, never a #1 hit, haha!). I don't know much about U2... It's a very important band and recognized worldwide but, for some reason, I never became a fan (not for making a parallel, but the same thing happens to me with INXS ... they are a great band, but it's like if all my love and attention were occupied at the time U2 or INXS was sounding on the radio, if you know what I mean?)
Finally, I want to say that we'll be here with you next fall when your son leaves for college. Did he already decide on what to study? College in your country is so different from college in Argentina, I'm afraid I'm asking a silly question here!
Oh, one more thing: I've never seen the Pet Sematary movie, but I'll make sure to watch it this weekend because now you got me all interested in your hometown!

    1. Romi, Sorry it took me so long to read your comments, but I always love reading them. Thanks to you, Vero and Kathy(miss you!) for helping me to regain my confidence enough to express myself again. I stifled myself for so long and self sabotaged any previous efforts I had to restart this blog. I don't want to forget Angela Kim in that list and Linda in VA. You have all done more for me just by being my friends, and I really needed that this year.
I did not read John Taylor's thing on writing, but I'm always interested in what JT has to say oh anything! I just hope Duran Duran can make it in the music industry one day. LOL
Thank you also in advance for the support next fall. I am going to be an emotional mess for a little while. I'm afraid of the crying spectacle I will make of myself at his graduation in June. My son hasn't picked a college yet, but he has been taking guitar lessons this year and really seems to love it. He would like to study music production, recording and engineering.
Did you watch Pet Sematary? I know it is a very dated movie, but I still love it for the obvious reasons.

    2. Hi Lisa!! No, please, don't apologise because there's nothing to be sorry about. There's no rush at all (we already live so fast!)
It's a great pleasure to be able to read and know you through your blog. Thanks for opening the door and inviting us in <3
Sadly, John's blog is no longer available... Luckily, Vero and I managed to "borrow" that text before they closed the web so I'm going to send it to your email (there must be some way to do that around here) because it's worth reading.
We need to have faith in those DD guys, I'm confident they will make it some day! ROFL
I think being emotional about Devin's graduation is normal Those of us who are very fortunate (like Devin and I) have/had our mothers by our side even when we no longer needed someone to hold our hands to enter class. You are also graduating with him, and for that you should be very proud and happy and a little anxious for what the future might bring, as I'm sure Devin is as well.
I'm sorry but Music Production sounds SO COOL! I can't play any instrument, even if my life depended on it, and numbers are not my thing so I'm already his fan for showing interest on a career as cool as complex as that
I DID watch Pet Sematary! Maine seems like a beautiful place, full of wonderful scenarios, lots of nature, very peaceful. But I get that I can enjoy the quiet rythym today... as a teen you always want it bigger and louder, hahaha!
Couldn't find the making of the '89 film, but I did find a guy who visited the filming locations (he showed snaps of the places now and then) and I love you can find even the actual truck used in the film, within the area... That's pretty awesome! Positively I'm adding this location to my Want-To-Visit list on Google Maps
