Must-See TV

Tonight, we say good-bye to the character of Michael Scott on "The Office". The Royal wedding has been all over the television and internet all week, but to me, Steve Carell's final episode of "The Office" is the real required viewing! I can't even tell you how much I adore this show and the bizarre cast of characters who inhabit it, especially Michael Scott. That is because this show makes me laugh out loud like very few other current shows. Some have grumbled "it's not as good as the UK version", or "that show 'jumped the shark' long ago", but they cannot sway my devotion to the staff of Dunder Mifflin in that little industrial park in Scranton. I will miss Regional Manager Michael, who put the "Dunder" in Dunder Mifflin with his inappropriate comments and questionable decision-making skills, for behind it all, he was full of heart and a child-like innocense that made him lovable. I always liked the episodes where Michael would go out on sales calls, because those eps showed that there was a shrewd businessman inside that idiotic exterior! But, I liked the goofy Michael even more, whether he was crank-calling Ryan to do his awful impressions ("Hi, this is Michael Jackson!" Okay, he does it funnier!!), singing "Stayin' Alive" with Andy and Dwight during a CPR demonstration or yelling "CONFERENCE ROOM! FIVE MINUTES!" at every opportunity. Sure, I will still watch the show sans Michael, as I love the ensemble characters, and I know that in fantasy land, Michael will be living nerdily-ever-after with his soulmate, Holly Flax, but there will always be something missing. So, all you Royal-watchers can prepare to get up at the crack of dawn to watch the wedding, but I prefer to say farewell to the "World's Best Boss" this evening.

  1. Last night was my husbands farwell party for his job. Ironically the band playing at teh abr the party was at was 'The Michael Scott Band' By the time we got home we had missed Michaels Goodby episode. We LOVE The Office for all the same reasons you do. I'm the only one where I work that watches The Office and the only one where I work who does not watch 2 1/2 men yet for some reason I get along very well with these people. Today I woke up a 4 am because I have one of those stupid cats like you do that thinks I need to watch it eat. Maybe thats Kathy's cat. Also my husband was snoring and would not even try to roll over for me. I decided to stay awake and went to the livingroom and watched all the hooplah that I had every intention not to watch for the wedding and I shed some tears. I was glad I got to watch it. Then I went to the computer and watched The Office. OMgosh did I cry..my favorite parts were when Michael kissed Erin on the head and told her she didn't need a mother because she has his number. When Dwight read the letter of reccomendation and lastly when Jim was in Michaels office telling him he will be having lunch with him tomorrow. I'm getting veklempt just typing this. Thanks for the awesome post!

  2. Thanks, Diana! It was a great episode! I loved how he said good-bye to each of his co-workers without actually saying "good-bye" to them. It was totally unexpected, as we all know that Michael Scott normally loves to be the center of attention and loves to be celebrated! The part with Erin was so sweet! I cried, too! I, too, loved the part with Michael and Jim in Michael's office, and I really loved when Pam caught up with Michael at the airport for their farewell, then she watched his plane take off. So touching, a really well-done episode. That is so funny that the Michael Scott Band played at your husband's farewell party! What a coincidence!
